Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP)
What is Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP)?
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP) or medical abortion is a low risk and effective non-surgical method for terminating a pregnancy up to 9 weeks gestation and is provided by some of the Doctors at Boronia Medical Centre.
It is a two-step process that involves taking two different medications.
The first medication blocks the hormones that are required for the pregnancy to continue. The second medication is taken 36-48 hours afterwards and this medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the contents of the uterus.
It has up to a 98% success rate and can be done in the privacy and comfort of your own home. You will also have access to a 24 hour nursing support line to offer you guidance and support while you are going through the process.
What is involved?
This service is usually conducted over 2 or 3 appointments:
Appointment 1: The initial appointment is to provide information and answer questions about the process, organise appropriate investigations and ensure you do not have any contraindications to MTOP. Please request a 30min appointment when booking. This appointment will be bulk billed.
Appointment 2: When you decide to proceed, the second appointment will be to answer any further questions, provide scripts for anti-nausea medication, pain medication and the two medications that are required for the termination. The out of pocket fee listed below will be charged at this appointment.
Appointment 3: The third appointment is conducted 14 days after you have the medical termination of pregnancy. This review appointment is crucial in ensuring there is no ongoing pregnancy or retained pregnancy tissue, discuss options for contraception and to ensure you have not developed any infection or other complications following the MTOP. This appointment will be bulk billed.
How much does it cost?
The out of pocket cost for a Private patient is: $250
The out of pocket cost for a Pensioner or HCC holder is: $150
You will also be required to purchase the medication from the pharmacy. This medication is available on PBS.
If you would like to book an initial appointment to discuss this with one of our Doctors, please call our friendly and supportive reception staff to book with the appropriate Doctor.
